In this review for Pro Tools Expert, Technical Editor James Ivey takes a look at the Torpedo Studio by Two Notes Audio Engineering. This amazing 2U rack unit makes recording guitar amplifiers really straightforward by allowing you to plug your amp or amp head directly into the unit and having it deal with the power soak issues.
The Torpedo Studio then takes the signal from the real amp and runs it through a variety of built in DSP simulated rooms, cabinets and microphones to allow you to create your perfect guitar tone without the need to have a super loud amp in the room.
This review concentrates on this aspect of what the Torpedo Studio can do but this is only one of the many jobs it can do for you as a recording guitarist. The Torpedo studio is also what's know as a power soak, meaning you can drive your guitar amp really loud to get the tone you want but with the Torpedo Studio in the signal path turning down the output to the speaker you can record the real speaker cabinet sound and the simulated cab tone at sensible volume levels.
The Torpedo Studio is also a very powerful re-ampling solution, making it easy to take that safety D.I. track and turn it into into a killer guitar tone through your real life amp and effects.
This is one for the guitar player and the audio engineer who loves to rock but just not too loud.
